Helderberg Swop · Care for the Elderly
Helderberg Swop is a community project in the Helderberg. People donate second-hand clothing, household goods and furniture — keeping usable items out of the landfill — and we swop them for food, so elderly people in need in our area have access to monthly food parcels.
How it works
One simple cycle does two good things at once — and every step depends on people like you.
Give your second-hand clothing, household goods and furniture — anything usable. Instead of going to the landfill, it becomes the start of a food parcel.
We share your donations with our thousands-strong Facebook community and swop them for food — turning pre-loved items into meals.
Every month, 50 elderly people in need in the Helderberg receive a food parcel — made possible entirely by the kindness of our community.
Who we are
Helderberg Swop is a community project with a simple, double purpose: keep usable items out of the landfill, and feed the elderly in need in our area. People donate second-hand clothing, household goods and furniture; we swop those items for food; and that food becomes parcels for the pensioners who need them most.
We're a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC 2024/218152/08), run by the community, for the community — and every donation and every hour given goes directly towards caring for our elders right here in the Helderberg. EDIT: add your founding story and who runs it, if you'd like.
Good clothing, homeware and furniture get a second life instead of being thrown away.
Consistent monthly parcels help the elderly stretch tight budgets and eat with dignity.
